Very friendly staff. I really enjoyed the location (close to the ferry to Bellagio). The town of Verenna is small, but a good choice of restaurants. I would definately stay here again.
This is a beautifully preserved hotel in a magnificent location. We were made to feel very welcome by the hotel staff and particularly by the owner, Laura. While some of the old-time bedroom furniture lacked modern comforts this did not detract from our enjoyment. On the contrary, not only was our room blessed with a fantastic view of the lake, its furniture made it feel very atmospheric. Having said that, the bath could have been bigger. We also enjoyed the food. Although simple, the meals were very tasty.Varenna is a lovely village and perfectly situated for exploring the lake. Highly recommended.
The location of the hotel was wonderful, with windows opening right on to the lake. Our friends had a room 'with a view of the lake' and it was just beautiful. Two double windows that opened on to the lake, right across from the ferry dock. Our room, with no view, was a strange attic type room under the dormers with two small windows, one so high that you had to stand on a stool to see out of it, and the other so low that you had to sit on the floor to see out of it. It was ok, cozy and comfortable, just a bit of a surprise as I assumed that 'no view of the lake' meant that you had a view of something else. The staff was very helpful and one of our friends wanted to come and stay for several weeks.
The attention from staff and the lakeview from our bed out the french doors and balcony.
Dark hallways and locked front door for our early morning departure.
Our room was fairly hot as it had no air conditioning in the middle of summer. Bathroom was clean however no shower curtains which meant that water constantly splashed on the floor tiles. The beds and pillows were also very hard so I woke up wirh minor back pain in the morning. Breakfast was very very basic. We were seated outside and the food seemed to attract swarms of bees attaching at the food every morning for the 3 days we were there. Wifi is only available at reception point. A few of the staff were friendly but some of the other family members ( place was family run) were not. Overall, I would not go back and stay at the hotel for that price.
Very warm and friendly lady managing the hotel.Felt very personal and comfortable, though she is firm(b'fast experience). The building has a lovely old world charm .We got a corner room, on the 2nd floor since we'd requested a quiet room.It was excellent with two balconies, and an amazing view of the lake. The location is good because it is a convenient distance from the train station (going back was tough because we had to roll our bags uphill all the way).Because of the hilly nature of the area, and the narrow streets, most hotels would be even more difficult to get to.We had dinner twice, and the food was quite good.
Did nt realise this hotel is located right at the ferry and boat jetty....so lots of people bustling about all the time .The beautiful view of the lake, from the outdoor restaurant area was, completely spoilt by cars parked along the waterfront.(The indoor dining room, unfortunately has very narrow windows, and no view). The breakfasts were not at all enjoyable due to this and the very slow replenishment of the limited items on the buffet....had to ask for refills of everything..cereal,juice,ham and bread...one by one.No eggs or other cooked items. The first day, missed it by 10 minutes,so was offered only a packaged croissant, coffee, and juice.
The building is fantastic. It is an old building with lots of character. The owners have maintaned this character by using antique furnishings. It is a luxurious atmosphere. The bathroom is large and clean. The rooms are large and the doors open onto a small terrrace and a great view of the lake. It is right on the lake front in the spot where the ferries leave. From the bed you can only see the lake and the mountains. There is noise during the day from the ferries coming and going but I enjoyed this. It is also really close to the train station. It is a short walk to the centre of Varenna.
The bed was a bit hard and the bed base sticks out from the mattress. I bumped into it several times and got a few bruises. There is no lift. These things didn't bother me too much and I will stay there again if I go back to Varenna.
I liked the old-fashioned ambience, the art nouveau style of decor',the hotel's location and Laura's efficient no nonsense style!
The unpredictable internet
The room was clean and roomy, bathroom was updated.
The entire hotel smells like cigarette smoke...the smell is very strong and in every room to the point I chose not to eat in their dining room, only had anitpasta on the porch. The hotel owner, Laura and her mother run the hotel and we found them both abrasive and unwelcoming. Their attitude really discolored our entire time in lake como.
The hotel is next to Varenna dock and has lovely views over lake como. It is a very traditional hotel, small, a little quirky, eclectic, antique furniture, but very good food, a large bedroom and very clean. We got on well with the owner who made us very welcome, but can see how others may not. This is a good hotel for 2 or three days, but does not have any facilities for a longer stay.It is in easy reach of Bellagio, which is a lovely town to visit.
There are quite a few notes with rules on, one says you can only pay cash, but credit card was accepted if booked with Booked.net.
The woman who runs the hotel could not have been more cordial, friendly and helpful. She really made the place memorable.
It is two steps from the ferry boat launch which makes for lots of noise from boats and pa announcing departures.
ferry crossing was noisey
Close proximity to the train station
We booked a room without a lake view because it was less expensive. It not only was a room without a view, it was a room on the fourth floor with teeny tiny windows - a death trap if there was a fire. Judging from the number of rooms with a key in the door, the hotel wasn't full and we felt it was rather stingy and short sighted not to up grade us.
The stay were more than helpful and happy. The food was great and atmosphere quaint. Loved being able to wake up and eat breakfast down stairs with a Lake view. Great accommodations and highly recommended!! Convenient location from train station and ferry port is literally right in front of the hotel. Loved my weekend here!!
The staff at Hotel Olivedo were great. Laura the landlady in particular was very helpful and accommodating.
If you have the window open you will hear the ferry announcements every 5 minutes or so from relatively early morning.
